"The first representation of the family in Pennsylvania was John Nicholas Schaeffer, who sailed from Rotterdam, Holland on the ship, Dragon, George Spencer master. He arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, September 6yh, 1749, and settled in Berks County and was commissioned Captain of the first battalion Berks Co. Militia January 20th, 1777. His Battalion rendered service in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York during the War of the Revolution. He was an extensive land owner and influential member of the community."
