Obiturary Translation

Christine Bittermann, daughter of Heinrich and Gottliebin Schäfer, was born 12 April 1853 in Johannesthal, South Russia. On 2 March 1871 she married Ludwig Kusler of Johannesthal. This marriage was blessed with eleven children, five sons and six daughters, of whom two sons and two daughters preceded the mother in death. They emigrated to America in the year 1873, lived temporarily in Sandusky, Ohio, and then took up a homestead in South Dakota eight miles southeast of Scotland, where they farmed with diligence and success. The sudden death of her husband came as a hard hit. He died of a heavy nerve fever 1887 at the age of 39 years. A few years later she married Georg Bittermann of Delmont, S. Dak., and thereafter was a loyal and diligent member of our congregational church in Delmont. As a young mother she converted and proved herself a loyal follower of Jesus Christ. The deceased enjoyed good health into old age; only in the last few years did she suffer from rheumatism. On 2 October [1935] she fell in such an unfortunate manner as to throw out her right upper arm. After the arm had been reset she did not particularly complain of pain, but she died only eight days later from the shock and her high age. On Wednesday 9 October she departed to the peace of the People of God. The departed reached an age of 82 years, 5 months, and 27 days. Her departure is mourned by her seven children, 35 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren, and 50 great-great-grandchildren. [A bible verse is quoted]. Delmont, S. Dak. John Meer, acting minister[1]
