William was born in 1870. He was the son of William Schaefer and Catharina Heiser.
The surname was originally Schaefer in Germany but became Schafer after William's father migrated to New York.
Early records give no indication that William had a middle name. But when he passed away in 1937 his grave showed "William B. Schafer". Did the initial B. actually stand for anything? Or the curious 19th century practice of using an initial that was totally meaningless? I speculate that the initial might have stood for Balthasar: his maternal grandfather was Johan Balthasar Heiser.
