Biography

Margaretha Elisabetha, child of Gerhard & Anna Maria Schafer, was baptized 12 Feb 1699. Sponsors were; Johann Philipp Debes from Hilgenroth, Anna Elisabetha Becker - daughter of the late Johann Valentin Becker from Hilgenroth, and Anna Margaretha Asmus - daughter of the late Jacob Asmus of Dickschied. Recorded in the Lutheran Church at Dickschied, Germany. [1]

After arriving in America, her parents resided for a while in Queensburg, NY, one of the Palatine settlements on the east side of the Hudson River. It was there on 23 Mar 1712 that Margaret Elisabeth took her first communion from Rev. Joshua Kocherthal. [2] Note: Kocherthal or the translator of the records spelled the name Schafer as Schaster/Schaester.

In Schoharie, NY on 22 Jan 1716 "the daughter of Gerhard Schaster" took communion, again from Rev. Kocherthal. [3] Note: This could be Margaret Elisabeth or a sister - it shows the family had moved to the Schoharie area.

Ludwig and Margaret Elisabeth married about 1719 in Schoharie Valley, NY. She is listed as Ludwig's wife in the 1744 congregation of the Lutheran Church in Stone Arabia, NY by Rev. Sommers.

"Greta Liesse" is recorded as a grandmother at baptism of son William's first child: Anna Margreta, child of Wilhelm & Anna Margreta Casselmann, born June 10, bap. June 19, 1739 at Steenrapy, child's grandmothers Greta Liesse Casselmannin & Anna Margareta Salzmannin are substituting for absent sponsors Jurge Salzman, Jr. & Anna Maria Casselmannin. [4]

No record of Margaret Elizabeth's death - she died sometime after 1744 & before June 1761.

I know info of your Schafers in the Albany area. My Albrights/Albrechts were there. They were with Conrad Weiser's people, in that area. Govenor Robert Livingston had Livingston Manor, not the today's town, but he had the Germans come over. They were tired of being mistreated, some left with Conrad Wieser to Tulpehocken Settlement. Others stayed and started Schafferstown, NY.

Schafer-201 and Schafer-84 appear to represent the same person because: Dates are close, spouse looks to be the same.
