Biography

Charles Dennis Schauer was born on Thursday, September 4, 1879, in Canton, Stark County, Ohio. He was the oldest of seven children born to John Edward Schauer (Friday, October 20, 1854 - Sunday, January 16, 1927) and Helen Caroline Piero Schauer (Friday, September 10, 1858 - Tuesday, December 18, 1923). His father was a tool maker and machinist who worked for many years in Canton at the Sun Vapor Street Light Company.

Charles appears in the 1880 U.S. Census for Canton as the nine month old son of John E. and Helen E. Schauer. There is no 1890 U.S. Census records available due to their being destroyed in a Washington, D.C. fire. His name does not appear in the 1900 U.S. Census. He would have been old enough to no longer be living at home, but his name does not appear in any later U.S. Census reports.

Clues are provided in the 1900 U.S. Census however. The 1900 U.S. Census asked the question bout how many children a woman had, and how many were still living. The answers recorded for Charles' mother were seven and four respectively. Charles was one of the seven, but not one of the four. It seems likely given the five year gap between Walter and Paul's births that two other children were born who died as infants.

It is likely Charles died in Canton, Stark County, Ohio. If he was still living when the family first moved to Chicago, he may have died in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.
