Biography
Vesta Marie Schauer was born Wednesday, July 5, 1916 in Erie, Erie County, Pennsylvania, the oldest of eight children. Her parents were Edward Thaddeus (Sunday, May 19, 1895 - Saturday, August 1, 1942) and Edith Marie Clark Schauer (Monday, May 16, 1898 - Sunday, February 2, 1992). At the age of nineteen Vesta married Boyd Edward Boyer on Monday, July 15, 1935 in Erie, PA. Boyd and Vesta were married in the living room of Rev. Jay M. and Lena Bentley. Jay was pastor of The Church of God in Erie.
Boyd and Vesta raised five children: Luanna Jean (Wednesday, July 8, 1936, in Erie), Beulah Mae (Sunday, October 3, 1937, in Erie), Boyce Edward (Saturday, December 2, 1939, in Erie), Edith Marie (Tuesday, July 4, 1944, in Ashtabula, Ohio), and Carl Elwood (Friday, May 24, 1946, in Ashtabula, Ohio). Carl passed away on Wednesday, April 7, 1999, in Fontana, San Bernardino County, California.
Both Boyd and Vesta were very active in the life of the Erie and later, the Ashtabula, Churches of God. They moved from Erie to Ashtabula in 1941 to assist in the development of the Ashtabula Church of God. Vesta became a youth leader in the church and also played the piano. They lived at 2406 Ridge Road in Ashtabula for more than thirty years. It was there that Vesta enjoyed gardening and raised vegetables and flowers.
It was in 1976 that Vesta suffered a severe stroke/cerebral hemorrhage at the age of fifty-nine. During her final fourteen years she had permanent limitations. She also had several transient ischemic attacks (mini-strokes). For a time prior to her husband's passing on Wednesday, January 16, 1985, she and Boyd lived in a mobile home in Ashtabula. Boyd's final eight months required medical treatment for a variety of issues and he lived in Flint, Michigan during those months. Vesta passed away on Tuesday, May 8, 1990 in Ashtabula. Vesta, Boyd, and their son Carl are interred at Ridgeview Burial Park, Ashtabula, Ashtabula County, OH.
