Biography

August was born in Feb 1855 in Pennsylvania. Although there is no currently known documentation of his parents' identities, his birth date and the hint from Grisby's Cowboys that he was born in Pottsville, PA both point to his parents as Lydia Reichert Scheibelhut and Joseph Scheibelhut. If this is true, then he is the son named August J who is enumerated in the 1860 and 1870 census records with Lydia and Joseph. See Lydia's profile for these census links. Because he lists himself as "single" and not "widowed" in both 1930 and 1940, it appears that he did not marry, and there are no records indicating any children.

Biography from Grisby's Cowboys[1]

"August J. Scheibelhut was born at Pottsville, PA, where he was educated and where he learned the butcher's trade, which business he followed for 15 years, afterward engaging in the hotel and liquor business. He has traveled extensively over the United States, having been in thirty-seven states, and has also traveled abroad. He went to Billings, Mont. as soon as he heard that a troop of calvary was being organized there, and was made Farrier of Troop M, Third United States Volunteer Calvary, with which organization he was mustered in May 17, 1898 and served at Camp Thomas, Ga., until muster-out September 8, 1898. After leaving the volunteer service he returned to Montana, and being an expert miner, is now engaged in prospecting in the Judith mountains of that state."
