Biography

Sophia was born either 13 or 16 March 1845 in Weiterswiller, Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France the daughter of Georg Schellenberger and Elisabeth Heinrich. FAG and the engraved monument have DOB 16 March 1845. Also cited in the FAG bio is a date of 13 March 1845 from death records of St. Paul United Church of Christ, Columbia, IL [1912 # 27]

When she was one year old, she came to the United States with her family. Immigration date, est. 1846. She resided in resided in Sugar Loaf Township and may have lived either in her father's household in 1865 near her brother George, or with her brother. Names are not given in that census.

1867 she married Anton Reichert.

30 July 1870, they lived in St. Clair Co., Illinois with 2 year-old son, John, and Margareth--11 mos. Edward Sanders--22, had been hired to work with Anton on the farm, while Sophia kept the home and cared for the children.

3-5 June 1880, the couple lived in Township 1 North Range 10 West, St Clair, Illinois with their children: John--12; Margaret--10; Mary--8; William--5; George--2, and a hired hand from Bavaria.

15 June 1900, aged 55, Sophia had been married to Anton for 33 years and given birth to 9 children/7 still living. She had been born in Germany with an immigration date of 1846. Son William J.--25 worked as a farm laborer, likely helping his father on the family farm in Sugar Loaf Township East Carondelet vill., St. Clair, Illinois. Daughters Regina C.--17 and Katharine M.--13, were also living at home with their parents. Bernhard Geiger lived and worked for them on the farm, as well.


She passed away 11 December 1912, at the age of 67. (FAG has 11 October 1912 as her DOD, but the monument is engraved with 11 DEZ--German for December. Also, church records cited in bio on the same site concur with the December date. Change has been suggested to FAG memorial manager.) BURIAL Baltz Cemetery St. Clair County, Illinois, USA
