Thanks for the welcome notice. I'm rather rusty as using websites that are new to me and I hope I learn quickly how to work and add to my tree....My question right now is, do I have to create a new tree of my family members first to get started...or will much of this information already have been uploaded like info that exists on other heritage sites...?

Hello Carolyn,

I would start by creating your immediate family members, deceased parents, grandparents, etc. so you get the feel of Wikitree and how it works.

If you have a tree on another site like Ancestry.com or Myheritage.com you can upload a GEDCOM file. The GEDCOM does not automatically populate your tree. It generates a GEDCOMpare report which you work through, either accepting or rejecting all suggested matches. Once that has been done, you should see [add] buttons for each of the remaining names.

Also see the GEDCOMpare process guide which has tips on how to use the data in the file most efficiently.

There is also an app that was created by one of our members called Wikitree X that can take the data from a Familysearch.org profile and create a profile on Wikitree.

IIf you want to communicate with cousins or others about genealogy (whether or not you want to add profiles on our single family tree), you can upgrade at no cost to the Family Member level at any time by adding your genealogy communication preferences.

Help:Membership

To do this, click on the upgrade link on either your navigation or profile page.

This should get you started.
