Dr. Washington Lafayette Schenck was born on February 14, 1825, in Franklin, Ohio, to Mary Plume and Garrett Alexander Schenck. When fifteen years of age, he was sent to Cary's Academy, at Pleasant Hill, Ohio, where he prepared for college. He entered Miami University in 1842 and continued until the second session of his senior year, when, because of a smallpox epidemic, he left the college and commenced reading medicine. He attended several different medical colleges. receiving his medical degree from Dartmouth College in 1848. Washington married Julia C. Bliss in Calais, Vermont, on January 12, 1849, when he was 23 years old, and they had five children. He made his home in Franklin, Ohio, until the War of the Rebellion, when he moved to Kansas, his home being Osage City, that State. When the war began, he was commissioned surgeon of the 17th O.V.I. In 1862, he was in charge of the general hospital near Corinth Miss., then of hospitals No. 10 and 13, Louisville, Ky., and then assigned to duty upon the staff of Major-General Schuyler Hamilton. In December, 1862, he was compelled to resign his commission because of ill health. He returned to his home in Franklin, but as soon as his health was fully restored, he was made surgeon of the board of enrollment for the Third Ohio District, where he served until after the close of the war. After Julie's death, Dr. Schenck married Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" Dodds in Osage City, Kansas, on January 16, 1873, and they had five children together. He died on January 4, 1910, in Topeka, Kansas, having lived a long life of 84 years, and was buried there.

Dr. Washington Lafayette Schenck died of pneumonia on January 4, 1910, in Topeka, Kansas, when he was 84 years old.[1]
Burial
Washington was buried in Mount Hope Cemetery in Topeka, Shawnee County, Kansas.[5]
Washington held the following offices at one time: Deputy U.S. Tax Collector; Mayor, Franklin, Ohio; Franklin, Ohio School Board; Kansas City Board of Health; University of Kansas; Kansas Medical College of Topeka as professor and trustee.[2]
