Biography

August Friedrich Emil Schenck was on December 6, 1834 in Herborn, Hesse, Germany. He immigrated to the United States after the Civil War settling in Iowa. He married Rachel and they had four children with one dying at an young age. He like to put on his census forms that he was a gardener for an occupation but he was much more. He owned a restaurant, sold insurance through the Metropolitan Life Insurance company, at one time a florist shop and he was communicating secretary for the German American Society in Des Moines, Iowa. When he died in Wyoming his body was brought back to Des Moines, Iowa to be buried with his wife and son.
