Biography

A memorial at Findagrave records that :

The monument stone located in this cemetery memorializes Joseph Horst (1723-1804) and his family who came over to America on the ship Britannia. They arrived on September 21 1731. Their name was spelled Horsh on the passenger list. Joseph's mother was Barbara Horst - whose husband died on the ship between Rotterdam and Philadelphia. Barbara and her other sons Michael (1713-1772) and Peter (1729-1795) lived out their lives in Pennsylvania. Barbara was a courageous and important settler whose true genealogy is still unresolved. [1]

An earlier version of the profile recorded that Barbara's husband's name may have been Michael, but provided no evidence.

Research Notes

Barbara should not be confused with Barbara Schenk of Lebanon Twp who married Joseph Horst in 1820. [2]

A number of editions of the Hursh-Horst-Hurst Family Quarterly (catalogued at FamilySearch) record that the mother of Joseph, Michael and Peter Horst may have been Barbara Schenk (b.c.1691), a grand-daughter of Michael Schenk of Eggiwil. These documents are all protected and can not be viewed online, and so it's unclear what evidence they may be relying on.

She wasn't likely the daughter of Hans Schenk (1664-abt.1732) - there wasn't a daughter Barbara included in the February 14,1733 division of his estate.

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Barbara by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Barbara:

I can find no evidence that Barbara's LNAB was Schenk. I believe she has been conflated with a different Barbara who married a man named Joseph Horst almost 100 years later, and that her LNAB should be "Unknown".

Did Hans and Mary have a daughter Barbara? Should we disconnect this profile from Joseph Horst and create a new Unknown? Or should we disconnect her from the Schenk's and change the LNAB to Unknown?

I've spent ages trying to untangle this family, and I think it's possible that Hans did have a daughter named Barbara (although I'm less convinced that his wife is identified correctly). I don't have access to the "Hursh-Horst-Hurst Family Quarterly" which is listed at FamilySearch and which seems to be where the idea originated that Barbara was a daughter of the Schenk family. Perhaps it's something that should be put to the G2G, to get an idea of how strong / tenuous / circumstantial the evidence is, before making a decision on the LNAB?

The G2G forum is always an option.
