Biography

Garret Schenk and his wfe Neeltje moved to Pleasant Valley about 1696. Two views of their home on the west side of the Matawan Holmdale Road, a short distance north of the crossroads in Pleasant Valley, Holmdel are found in Beekman's "Early Dutch Settlers in Monmouth Co."pg 12. Another account of the house without pictures is in Rosalie F. Bailey's "Pre-Revolutionary Dutch Houses" pg 406/8.

Garret was a charter member of the Dutch Reformed Church in Freehold and was also an Elder. He was a member of the Provincial Assembly of New Jersey.

1739, Jan. 12. Schenck. Garrat. of Middletown, Monmouth Co., gent.; will of. Wife, Neelkie. Son, Raeloffe, the great Dutch Bible, meadow at Conascunk meadows and the third of landing on Chingaroras Creek. Sons Raeloffe and Garrat, neck of land adjoining Capt. Reid's. Son, Koert. Son, Garrat, lot adjoining Hendrick Hendrickson, land bought of John Bowne, March 10, 1705, and testator's home plantation. Sons, John and Albert, land at Brunswick, bought of Koert Van Voorhuyse, Nov. 5, 1723. Five daughters, Mary, Alkie, Neelkie, Rachel and Margaret, land at Conascunk purchased of Hendrick Hendrickson, and 986 acres at Penns Neck bounded by Tatamus Swamp, Bear Swamp and Asinpink Creek. Grandchildren, sons and daughters of daughter Anne (evidently eight in number). Granddaughter. Nelly. Personal estate after wife's decease to testator's eleven children. Executors—wife, son Roeloflfe and son-in-law Hendrick Hendrickson. Witnesses—Johannes Bennet, Roelyf Covenhoven and Robert Dodsworth. Proved Oct. 7. 1745. Roelef Schenck and Hendrick Hendrickson sworn as executors. Lib. D. p. 334. [1]
