Biography

John was a son of Philip Schermerhorn and Charity Carpenter, born Aug. 24, 1805. He resided in Schodack, New York. He died Apr. 5, 1855, in Schodack.

He m. (1) Jan. 25, 1830, Hity Maria Van Buren, b. Jan. 22, 1809; d. Aug. 3, 1830. He married (2) June 15, 1831, Julia Ann Benton; b. July 4, 1812; d. July 28, 1858. Julia was a daughter of Samuel Benton, who served in the War of 1812, in the 76th Regt. N. Y. Militia.

  1. Walter Alexander, b. Dec. 2, 1832; m. Feb. 22, 1859, in Schodack, Anna V. Johnson. Their daughter Ida was born 19 November 1859, baptized in Schodack.
  2. Lucas John, b. Oct. 22, 1834; d. May 27, 1889.
  3. Susan Ann, b. Jan. 15, 1837; bp. in Schodack; m. Nov. 5, 1862, in Schodack, Sherman Kittle.
  4. Isaac Carpenter, b. May 21, 1839; bp. in Schodack; d. June 22, 1881. He (Isaac C. Schermerhorn, son of John P.), enlisted in 1862 in the 59th Regt., N. Y. Infantry.
  5. Benton Monroe, b. Mch. 6, 1842; bp. in Schodack; m. Clara Cunningham.
  6. Philip John, b. Apr. 4, 1845; bp. in Schodack; d. July 4, 1881.
  7. Caroline Jeannette, b. Nov. 19, 1847; bp. in Schodack; d. July 18, 1858.
