Biography

Lucas was a son of Jacob Schermerhorn Jr. and Antie Van Vechten. He was baptized in the Reformed Dutch Church of Kinderhook, New York, on 15 October 1732.[1]

Lucas Schermerhorn lived at Schodack, New York, where he owned about 400 acres of land. He and his wife were members number 50 and 51 of the Old Schodack Church.[2]

He was married to Wyntje (a.k.a. Winnifred) Fitzgerald on 10 June 1758, after obtaining a marriage license. Their children were:[3]

  1. Antje (Nancy), born about 1759; married to Frans Wilson on March 12, 1778, in Claverack, New York.
  2. John L., born about 1761; married Anna Shepard.
  3. Mary, born about 1763; married Sept. 21, 1783, in Kinderhook, Johannes J. Huyck.
  4. Jacob L., born about 1765; married Neeltie Saunders. [4]
  5. Cornelius L., born about 1768; m. July 30, 1791, Catalyntje Van Valkenburgh. [5]
  6. Ryer L., born Dec. 5, 1770; baptized in Schodack; m. Leany Van Valkenburgh.
  7. Derrick L., b. Apr. 16, 1775; married Eva Van Valkenburgh.
  8. Philip L., born Jan. 4, 1778; baptized in Kinderhook; married Charity Carpenter.

Lucas was commissioned on October 21, 1775, as Captain of the First Company, 4th Regiment, and Rensselaerwyck Battalion, under Colonel Kilian Van Rensselaer.[6]

Lucas made his will on 19 September 1787. It was recorded in Albany, New York on 1 September 1, 1788.[7]
