Summary of his life

Jean Schexnayder was born about 1734. He died March 2, 1784 according to civil records[4][5] and March 3, 1784 according to the church records, which also indicate he was buried on March 4.[6] Since the civil record is months later, the church record seems more likely to be accurate. Like many of the time, Adam was a slaveholder with six slaves named in his succession inventory:[4]

    Inventory of the property of the late Adan SEGNEIDER dit Albert made by Thomas Becnel and Jean Bpte Rodrigue, appraisers appointed by Maurice O'Conor, in presence of the widow, Agnes MAYER; Jan Mayer, her brother; Jean MIETTE, her brother-in-law; Jean WEBER; and Antoine BORNE. Segneider died intestate 2 March 1784 leaving several minor children. Slaves listed are Sebastian, around 30, Congo nation; Pierre, around 40, Nago nation; Antoine, around 7, creole; Francois, creole, 4; and Charlote, around 18, and her daughter, Marie Jeanne, Poularre nation. Act of tutorship of the minor children in presence of the widow, Agnes Mayer; Jean Mayer, her brother; Jean Miette, her brother-in-law; Thomas Becnel and Jean Bpte Rodrigue, her neighbors; and Jean Web, Antoine Borne, and Joseph Perrette in place of relatives. They name the widow as tutor and Thomas Becnel as subrogate tutor.

    Tutorrship, May 17, 1784. Agnes Mayer, widow of Adam Segeneider (Schexnayder), petitions that a tutor and surrogate tutor be named for her minor children. O'Conor summons Jean Mayer, Agnes' brother; Jean Millet, her brother-in-law; Thomas Becnel and Jean-Baptiste Rodrigue, her neighbors; along with Jean Weber, Antoine Borne and Joseph Perret; to select a tutor and surrogate tutor. Agnes Mayer is named tutor and Thomas Becnel is named surrogate tutor.
