Biography

Newspaper article provided by William G Schick of Rockford, Illinois. It is dated Tuesday, 9 December 1958: "Earl E Schick Fatally Injured In Head-On Crash Monday Night "A Rock Falls man was fatally injured Monday night when his automobile ricochets off a bridge and swerved into the path of an oncoming car. "Earl E Schick, Rt 1, was pronounced dead on arrival at Community General Hospital. He was 51. "Russell A Hoover, 55, 807 Ave E, Sterling, driver of the other auto, escaped injury. "State troopers Corp James Rosenow and Francis Smith said Schick was traveling east on the Rock Island blacktop road when his car struck the bridge over Holland Creek about 8 p.m. "Schick's car careened into the path of Hoover's auto. The victim was hurled out of his auto. "Dr John McDonnell, deputy coroner of Whiteside County, conducted an inquest this afternoon in the Melvin Funeral Home. "Mr Schick had been employed at Northwestern Steel and Wire Co for the past 23 years. "Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Melvin Funeral Home, with the Rev Donald Comnick, pastor of the Rock Falls Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Oak Knoll Memorial Park. "Mr Schick was born Jan 24, 1907, in Rock Falls, son of Carl and Freda Grater Schick, and attended schools in Rock Falls. "He was a member of the Rock Falls Moose Lodge, Eagles and the American Legion. "Surviving are one daughter, Mrs Marion Franks, Rock Falls; a son, Albert, serving with the Armed Forces in Germany; his mother, Mrs Freda Schick, Rock Falls; two brothers, Herbert and Kenneth, Rock Falls; four sisters, Mrs Jack Kelsey, Mrs James Chapman, Mrs Clarence Aper and Mrs Julia A Renner, all of Rock Falls; and one grandson, Bobby Ray Franks, Rock Falls. "His wife, Bertha, died June 26, 1951, and a son, Donald, died June 26, 1951. "Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. Wednesday."

The Daily Gazette, Sterling-Rock Falls, Illinois, Wednesday, 10 December 1958, page 2: "Earl Schick Death Ruled Accidental By Coroner's Jury "A coroner's jury ruled the death of Earl E Schick, Rt 1, Rock Falls, accidental. "Schick 51, was fatally injured Monday night when his auto struck a bridge and swerved into the path of another vehicle on the Rock Island blacktop road about two miles east of Rock Falls. "Dr John McDonnell, deputy coroner who conducted the inquest at the Melvin Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon, said Schick received a severe skull fracture and internal injuries and was dead on arrival at Community General Hospital. "Russell A Hoover, 55, 807 Ave E, told the jury that he saw Schick's car strike the bridge abutment and the 'next thing I knew it was right there in front of my car'. "Hoover's car struck the victim's auto in the left rear as it swung into the opposite lane of traffic Schick was thrown out of his car. "Corp James Rosenow of the state highway police said Schick's car went off the roadway some 176 feet before it struck the abutment. "The officers said Bela R Larson of Nelson said Schick's driving was erratic as he followed the victim's car from Rock Falls. He said he was about a half a mile behind when the cars collided."
