Obituary: Washington Post Sept. 17, 2006 SOL SCHILDHAUSE, 89 a prominent figure in the evolution of cable TV, died in his sleep on September 15, 2006 in Bethany Beach, DE. A cable TV enthusiast dating from the mid 1960's, when it was considered daring for a Federal Communications Commission employee to depart from the official line that disfavored cable because it threatened broadcast TV, Mr. Schildhause as the first Chief of the agency's Cable TV Bureau was perceived as an unconventional scrapper who somehow managed to defy the institutional bias. He is widely credited with having softened the FCC's treatment of cable TV and was the author of the 1972 regulatory turnabout that is said to have been a decisive moment in the cable industry's subsequent development. Mr. Schildhause is survived by children, Susan Tash of Evanston, IL, Peter (Deon) Schildhause of San Francisco and Lake Tahoe, CA and Richard (Stephanie) Schildhause of Jacksonville, FL. He is also survived by his companion, Gail Beaumont of Arlington, VA and Bethany Beach; sister, Hannah Glenn of Hollywood, FL. and six grandchildren. Graveside services will be held on Monday, September 18 at 2:30 p.m. at Judean Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy in his memory may be made to The South Coastal Library, Bethany Beach, DE.
