Biography

Josephine Schindler has German Roots.

Birth - Josephine Gertrude Schindler Falke was born on September 25, 1861 in Windiscch, by Gratz, Austria according to her Petition for Naturalization form dated January 19. 1934.[1]

Disputed Birthdates

It should be noted that there are various dates of birth and places of birth found for Josephine Gertrude Schindler Falke. Her Petition for Naturalization and her Declaration of Intention (for Naturalization) Show her being born in Windisch, by Gratz, Austria on September 25, 1861. Various census records show a wide range of dates of birth ranging 3 to 4 years on either side of 1861 and places of birth vary from Germany, Austria, Prussia, Russia, and a few others.

Immigration: She came to the United States in December, 1875 at the age of 14 with her parents. They left from Breman, Germany on the ship Frankfort, and departed at the port of Galveston, Texas. [2]

Another immigration record sites: Joseph Schindler and his family arrived at the Port of New Orleans on Nov 15, 1870. The manifest gives their ages at the time. Joseph was 48 making his date of birth about 1822. Those in his family with him were his wife Magdalena (44) and children Framz (19), Theresa (8), Maria (7), Josepha (6), and Franzika (4).[3]

The New Orleans record is not correct. I think it was misfiled by the National Archives.

Marriage: married Herman John Falke in Fayette County, Texas on March 28, 1886[4]

1900 Federal Census, living in El Campo, Wharton, Texas with husband Herman and children Gosephen, Minnie, Herman, Myrtle, Ivie, and Viola[5]

1920 Federal Census living with husband Herman J. Falke in Sandy Point, Brazoria, Texas. Both Josephine and Herman claim wrongly to be from Russia. Their children are living with one of their daughters and her husband in Houston. [6]

1930 Federal Census is living with husband Herman Falke and daughter Vida (Viola) in Houston, Harris County, Texas[7]

Declaration of Intention (Naturalization) on December 1, 1936[8]

Petition for Naturalization submitted on December 19, 1939[9]

1940 Federal Censusshows her living alone in Houston, Texas. Husband Herman Falke had passed away in 1935 and children had left home[10]

Death Josephine Gertrude Schindler Falke passed away in Houston, Texas on December 14, 1959. She died of lumbar pneumonia. She is buried at the Rosewood Cemetery, Humble, Texas[11]
