Joe Schindler, 71, Killed In Truck-Train Crash
Joe R. Schindler, 71, formerly of here, was killed instantly in a collision between a freight train and the fire truck in which he was riding with his son, Frank Schindler, at 2:50 o'clock last Saturday afternoon at Deer Park.
The son, 44-year-old welder who doubles as volunteer fire chief of the Deer Park department, had taken the fire truck on a trial run, checking the battery charge, and had invited his father to accompany him. Knocked 50 Feet
The train, a Southern Pacific Lines freight driven by R. H. Donley, 61. of Houston, struck the truck on its side at almost dead center, knocking it about 50 feet. The elder Mr. Schindler was thrown through the windshield. He was declared dead after being taken to Medical and Surgical Hospital. Chief Schindler was treated at the same hospital for cuts on the head and left hand, and released.
The fire chief said the train seemingly "came out of nowhere'. He said he had looked both ways and the track seemed clear. Train officials said the engineer blew his whistle several times arid tried to brake the train to a stop when he saw the truck. Funeral Here Tuesday
Funeral services for Mr. Schindler were held here Tuesday morning at Hubbard Funeral Home and SL Michael's Catholic Church, with Rev. Benton Thurmond officiating. Interment was in St. Michael's Cemetery.
Six nephews, Oscar Schindler, Edgar Bahner, Edgar Kainer, Val. Huvar, Bill Huvar Jr. and Val. Matcek, served as pallbearers.
Mr. and Mrs. Schindler had moved to Deer Park only last August and built a home there. Mr. Schindler had retired from his job with Barbee Hatchery in Yorktown, where they had lived for about 18 months. Married Here in 1906
Born June 8, 1881, in Germany, Mr. Schindler was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Schindler Sr. His parents brought him to this country when he was 12 years old, settling near Weimar, where he spent his boyhood. He married Miss Mary Huvar here October 16, 1906, and they lived at Schulenburg. Victoria and Hillje before going to Yorktown. He was a member of the Catholic Church and Hermann Sons Lodge.
Survivors in addition to his wife are two daughters, Mrs. Dennis (Annie) Bode of San Antonio and Mrs. Henrietta Tackett of Los Angeles, Calif.; his son. Frank, of Deer Park; four brothers, John, Adolph, Albert and Emil, all of Weimar; three sisters, Mrs. Joe B. Kainer, Mrs. Frank Bahner and Mrs. Fred Billeck Jr., all of Weimar; and four grandsons, Bobby Seagraves Tackett, in the Navy, Larry Bode, and Gary and Ronald Craig Schindler.
