Joseph Francis Schipp was born in the Colony of New South Wales (1788-1900)
Joseph Francis Schipp has roots in the region now known as Hessen, Germany.
Joseph Francis Schipp has Irish ancestors.

Joseph Schipp was born on 15 August 1878 in or near Maclean in the Colony of New South Wales. He was the eldest son and third child of Ferdinand (Frederick) Schipp (1848 - 1932) and his wife Catherine Nolan (abt. 1852-1937) (sometimes written Nowlan). His parents were farmers at Palmer's Channel, a small village then addressed to Clarence River. Joseph was probably born at Palmer's Channel. However, his birth was registered in nearby Maclean. His birth was registered under the name "Joseph Schipp". However, he became known as Joseph Francis Schipp. Francis was probably a baptismal or confirmation name.[1]

Joseph's father, Ferdinand Schipp, was born in Eltville, Nassau (now Hesse, Germany) and came to the Clarence with his parents when a child of three years. His mother was born in the Hunter River district to Irish parents. Joseph spent his childhood at Palmer's Channel.

Joseph married Helena McDermott/Macdermott on 12 January 1915 in or near Raymond Terrace. Helena was a daughter of Thomas and Julie McDermott from Raymond Terrace.[2] The couple lived in or near Maclean for most of their lives. In 1932, they were living at Harwood.

Helena and Joseph Schipp had four children:

  • Catherine H Schipp, birth reg'd in 1915 at Maclean[3]
  • Thomas P, birth reg'd in 1915 at Maclean
  • Joseph R, birth reg'd in 1918 at Maclean
  • Matthew BJ, birth reg'd in 1922 at Maclean

Helena Schipp died on 25 June 1964 aged 78 years in or near Maclean.[4]

Joseph died on 27 August 1973, probably in Lismore, New South Wales, aged about 95. His death was registered in Lismore.[5] His name is inscribed next to Helena's on a memorial in Maclean Cemetery with a death date of 27-8-73. The memorial shows he died aged 95 years.[6]

Research Notes

  1. The children of Ferdinand Frederick Schipp and his brother Charles Frederick Schipp are sometimes confused and need to be detangled here (and elsewhere)
  2. In 1905, Joseph Schipp was best man for Albert Henry Gray when he married Joseph's sister Catherine Cecilia Schipp on Wednesday, 25 Oct 1905, in St. Patrick's R.C. Church, Maclean.[7]
  3. On his mother's death certificate, he appears as "John F 58yrs" [living].
