Early years

Mary Ann (Schipp) Drury was born in the Colony of New South Wales (1788-1900)
Mary Ann (Schipp) Drury has German Roots.

Mary Ann Schipp was born on 11 March 1883. She was a daughter of Martin Schipp Jun. (1857-1935) and his first wife Ellen (Shea) Schipp (1860-). She was probably born on Palmer's Island where her parents farmed. Her birth was registered in Maclean in northern New South Wales.[1] Her father was born in the Colony to German parents who arrived from Eltville, Nassau on the Reiherstieg in 1852.[2]

In 1891, her mother died in tragic circumstances.[3] Mary Ann was just 6 years old. Her father remarried in 1905 when Mary Ann was about 22 years old.

Personal Life

By 1928, Mary Ann had left Maclean and was living in Sydney where it was alleged she entered into a relationship with William Charles Drury who was a married man. According to newspaper reports, the pair commenced their relationship at some point between 1 January and 2 February 1928. William's wife, Emma Drury (nee Phillips), was not happy and initiated divorce proceedings. Mary was named in those proceedings and in newspaper articles published between 1928-1934. By 1934, Mary and William were living together although he claimed as her boarder.

It seems her family knew about the relationship although they may have believed them to be married as Mary is identified as "Mesdame W Drury, Bankstown" in her father's obituary which was published in Maclean in 1935. However, it seems unlikely the couple was married at the time as William's divorce was not finalised until 1937.

The couple were legally married on 17 September 1952 in Sydney.[4]

Death

Mary died just four years later on 25 July 1956 in Campsie. [5] No death or funeral notice have been found, nor any record of her burial.
