Jacob Schirck, III was born in August 26, 1836. He was the son of Jacob Schirck and Catherine Schuler.

Jacob Schirck, III was named for his father and grandfather. Like his grandfather who had fought for Napoleon, Jacob Schirck, III became a soldier.

Jacob Schirck, III was the first in his family to join up when the United States Civil War began. He enlisted in Company H of the 10th Pennsylvania Reserve Regiment (39th Infantry) on June 22, 1861.

Jacob Schirck, III was in the battle of Dranesville, December 20, 1861, Mechanicsville, June 26, 1862, Gaines' Mill, the next day, Charles City Cross Roads, June 30, Malvern Hill, July 31, and the battle of Second Bull Run, beginning August 28; in this battle he was killed August 30 1862 in Prince William County, Virginia.

Jacob Schirck, III was only 26 years old when he was killed at Second Bull Run. He did not marry or have children.

Jacob Schirck, III had several brothers and sisters, including a brother Philip who also fought in the United States Civil War, and a sister Catherine who married a Civil War veteran named Lawrence Lesser. Jacob's brother Philip Schirck joined the war effort in February 1864, after his death.

  5. Mathias Schirck, born August 24, 1846 and married Anna Baker on July 3, 1873.
  6. Catherine Schirck, born June 30, 1848, who married Civil War POW survivor Lawrence Lesser.
  7. Mary M. Schirck, born November 14, 1850 who married William Yeagle and moved to Russell, Pennsylvania.
  8. Carrie B. Schirck, born May 20, 1853, who married Clayton Cheney, was widowed and married Fenton B. Hayward.

Jacob Schirck, III is buried in Gross Mead Cemetery on Yankee Bush Hill in Conewango Township, Warren County, Pennsylvania.

Sharon, Could you please make the following changes in the categories:
  • correct the spelling to "Dranesville"
  • correct to "Battle of Gaines' Mill"
  • change "Battle of Charles City Cross Roads" to "Battle of Glendale" - I will then add the Battle of Charles City Crossroads as one of its aka names
