The Schlemmer Sisters

Biography

Mabel Emma Schlemmer was born on March 23, 1905 at Allen County, Indiana.[1] Her parents were Henry Schlemmer and Mary Scaer.[2] It was a home birth at the family farmhouse. Eventually, this same home would become the home of Mabel and her husband, Paul Lehrman:

Henry Schlemmer and Mary Scaer had a small farm near Monroeville, Indiana. When Mabel was young, she and her siblings attended the one room schoolhouse called "the Schlemmer Schoolhouse" on Lortie Road near the Schlemmer homestead.

Mabel came of age during the Roaring Twenties. Here she is dressed in her flapper gear. Maybe she learned the Charleston, a popular dance of those days.

At the age of 24, Mabel Schlemmer was married to her sweetheart, Paul Lehrman.[3] Once, he told a story that, as a young bachelor farmer, Mabel caught his eye. He thought that she might make a good wife, but marriage was a big step. He wanted to make sure that she knew how to cook. He decided to hire Mabel to cook for him to see if he liked her cooking. Then he hired Mabel to clean for him to see how that went. He said, "Well, I really liked her cooking and I really liked her cleaning, so I decided to propose marriage." It was just a silly story told to a young grandchild, but a memory to share.

Mabel and Paul Lehrman had 4 children:

Joyce Lehrman Hambrock[5]
Noella Lehrman Moore[6]
Joella Lehrman Stephenson

Mabel had a gorgeous flower garden. She probably also grew veggies, but she really had a green thumb with flowers. In the spring there were lilacs and daffodils, the summer brought geraniums, pansies and petunias. Grandma called them all "posies." She loved the outdoors. Here she is having a picnic with her daughters:

Mabel was very creative and always making something colorful with her hands. She had a box with felt of many colors and pinking shears and magnets.... When the grandchildren came to visit, she would whip up a butterfly or a bluebird or a cardinal for each child to take home.

Paul and Mabel Lehrman celebrated their Golden (50 Year) Wedding Anniversary in September of 1979.

In her later years, Mabel's hands shook from Parkinson's Disease, so she stopped making little handmade trinkets. Mabel died on October 9, 1986, from complications due to Parkinson's.[7] She is buried at the Monroeville Memorial Cemetery in Monroeville, Indiana.[8]

Female descendants carry mitochondrial DNA of I4b. This is called "mitochondrial Iris." The flower iris is used as the background image of some others in this line. However, Mabel always had mass plantings of colorful petunias in her home garden. This is why that flower is used for her background image.

Mabel was my grandma. I remember her sitting on her blue velvet couch and crocheting doilies. She crocheted each of her grandchildren an afghan. Susie's favorite color was purple, and she received a purple afghan. Paula and Lisa both received afghans with pink roses on them. Mine was chocolate brown and I always felt a little envious of my sisters' pretty flowered ones.
