--BIBLIOGRAPHY--

Jean Pierre Schlemmer and Catharina nee Saling, inhabitants of the mountainous village of Erckartswiller, France, had 10 children in their home country. The fourth of them was Jacques Jacob, who also went by the nickname John. Jacques was born on what may have been a cold and snowy day, namely November 14, 1822. He was baptized shortly thereafter in Apollonia Lutheran Church. He remained in France when his parents and several siblings emigrated to America in 1834, as his name is entered in the 1836 French census. He immigrated to Monroe Township in Allen County, Indiana, by or in 1846. On October 27 of that year he purchased 40 acres of the Land Grant land that had been awarded to his father. He paid his father $400.00. A most careful and exacting study of land maps showed that his property was located directly across Lortie Road from Pierre's property, 1/4 mile north of Hoagland Road and extending 1/2 mile north from there. It abutted Philipp's 40 acres on the south. On June 24, 1847, Jacques married Elizabeth Ann Miller from Adams County, as found in the Clark’s Chapel records on Family Search. Their marriage license can be found on the Mormon site and in Indiana Marriages. She was identified as Schlemmer in the Clark's Chaper records. Less than one month later, on July 5, Jacques enlisted in the Army to fight in the Mexican-American War. He then wrote a Will, dated August 9, in which he left everything to his wife. The Will was written in Adams County, the county next to Allen County on the south. Jacques's probate papers were signed on September 25, 1847. Tragically Jacques was killed in the war. We do not know exactly when he died, but judging by the date when he signed his Will and the date it went to Probate, he undoubtedly died very soon after he arrived in Mexico. In 1857 brother George sold Jacques's property in Indiana to Heinrich Jackemeyer who was the uncle of Conrad Jackemeyer, Sr. Conrad had married Catharina Schlemmer, the youngest sister of Jacques. Catharina, who was the only Schlemmer baby to have been born in the United States, and Conrad were my great-grandparents.
