HH Prince Axel of Denmark and Iceland was born in 1888.
He was the second son of Prince Valdemar of Denmark and his wife, Princess Marie d'Orléans. He was the paternal grandson of Christian IX of Denmark and his wife, Luise of Hesse-Kassel, Queen of Denmark. His maternal grandparents were Prince Robert d'Orléans, Duke of Chartres, and Princess Françoise of Orléans.
Prince Axel was a member of the International Olympic Committee in 1932, and a director of Scandinavian Airlines System. From 1937 until his death he was chairman of the board of the East Asiatic Company.
He was married to his cousin, Margaretha of Sweden in 1919. Together they had two sons.
They lived at the the villa Bernstorffshøj adjacent to the palace park. By special request, the Danish government allowed the Prince and his family to be buried in the Park of Berstorff Palace.
