I have been working on tracing my family roots since 2012. My mother's paternal line is the Leblanc line that I am tracing and her maternal line is the Gregson family. My father's paternal line is Schmidt, but he changed his name when he immigrated to America from Russia in 1906. I found out that his biological name was Zalkovski. He may have chosen Schmidt because in Latvian this means blacksmith (which was his occupation). He was born in 1883 in Goldingen, Russia, now Kuldiga, Latvia. He came to America in 1906 for a better life. His maternal side of the family where named Blumberg/Bloomberg.
