Carl Anthony Schmidt (Charlie Smith) was born in Vining, Minnesota on September 10, 1886 to George and Margaretha (Singer) Schmidt. He was baptized in the Catholic faith at Our Lady of Seven Dolors in Millerville, Minnesota. He came to North Dakota when he was 19 years old and worked on a farm five miles west of Cuba. In the early 1900's he came to the Kathryn community and farmed.
Charlie married Bertha (Hackbarth) Neustaedster on June 30, 1914. They lived east of the King School for 5 years, then moved to a farm one mile north of Kathryn.
Charlie and Bertha had seven children, including two sets of twins. Pearl was born in 1917, Florence was born in 1919, James and Jane were born in 1921, Ralph was born in 1922, Robert and Ray were born in 1923. Pearl died when she was 6 years old of pneumonia, and Robert and Ray died three days after they were born. When James and Jane were born they weighed 2 and 1/2 pounds each and were kept in shoe boxes on the oven door so they would stay warm.
Charlie farmed most of his life. He was an avid hunter and hunted until 1970.
Charlie lived in Grafton and worked on a potato farm until 1975, when he went to the nursing home at Cooperstown where he stayed until he died in 1978, at the age of 89. He is buried at the Waldheim Lutheran Church Cemetery.
