Biography

He emigrated to England in the early 1790s and established his bakery in the newly built specially designed area of Seven Dials. His two younger brothers joined him in 1797 when Napoleon's army was two days march from their home village in Germany. They all spoke French as their home was very close to the French border and had sometimes been ruled by France.
