NOTE DATE OF BIRTH HERE IS JANUARY 12 From Atelope Co. history book Charles J. Schmidt came to Nebraska from Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, in the early 1900's. He came originally to visit cousins at Dodge, Nebraska. Carl found work on various farms in Cuming County. He married Louise Lange at Dodge, Nebraska, on December 18, 1912. They farmed near West Point, Nebraska, for three years. They purchased 160 acres in Antelope County from james Cowey, in 1915. They transported their livestock and machinery to their new home near Elgin bu train. The farm buildings were in a very run down condition and therefore were completely remodeled. In 1924, the new hog barn was destroyed by a windstorm. In 125, a fire completely consumed the barn, macine shed, and granary. All these buildings were rebuilt by Carl and his father from Wisconsin, who were both caprenters and farmers by trade. The large barn was built to accommodate a dairy herd which had to be sold in the 1930's because of a lack of feed. The only original building remaining (Note: the barn was destroyed by lightening when June and Art were still on the farm) is the house, which has been extensively remodeled. Carl, besides farming, did some custom work, shelling corn, and sawing wood for neighbors to supplement their income. During the 1930's when a severe drouth came to this area, he took his ensilage cutter and corn binder to the Antelope and Clearwater Creek areas to cut corn for those fortunate enough to raise some corn. The Schmidts were the parents of a daughter June, born June 17, 1918, and a son Roy, October 10, 1925. A son Carl died in infancy. (see family info on June and roy)

Mr. & Mrs Schmidt remained on their farm until their deaths. Carl passed away May 7, 1975 and Louise, July 3, 1978. Obit Charles J.
