Biography

"Jacob Schmit of Ernsdorf, almost certainly the son of Gerhart above, was probably born ca. 1505. He paid feudal dues in 1542, 1546 and 1549, and seems to have been still living on Feb. 6, 1572, when he made a complaint before the Court of Hilchenbach, and brought in his son Hannesmann, as a witness. In addition to Hannesmann, Jacob Schmidt's eldest son seems to have been Tilman Schmith of Ernsdorf...[1]

SCHMIDT is the proper German spelling of the name SMITH, meaning a metalworker.

I suppose we could say that Schmidt is the proper MODERN spelling of the name Smith. The early German records of this family, in B.C. Holtzclaw's book on the Nassau-Siegen immigrants to Germanna, Virginia, include Smyt, Smith(!), Schmyt, Schmit and Schmith, as well as Schmidt.
