Philipp Jakob Schmidt died in 1851 when he was only 38 years old. Because of the timing of his death, it may have been related to the third cholera pandemic that swept across Russia between 1850 and 1860, killing more than 1 million Russians. [2]

His wife also died before 1857, leaving his two surviving children without parents. At the point of her death, his brother Georg Heinrich Schmidt became the head of the household. He and his wife Katharina most likely raised their nephews along with their own children.
