Biography

Volga German
Maria (Schmidt) Balzer is a Volga German.
Maria (Schmidt) Balzer has German Roots.

Family #Sp34 in the 1798 Stephan census.

Anna Maria Schmidt was born about 1750 in Germany. She was married first to Konrad Just by 1769. Their first of two children was born in 1770; their second child was born in 1774. Konrad Just died before 1778, giving his widow Anna Maria time to marry her second husband, Johannes Balzer, from Grimm, a man 9 years her junior. Anna and Johannes had their first child in 1779, and then went on to have five documented children by 1798.

  • Johannes, born 1779
  • Eva Elisabeth, born 1781
  • Barbara Katharina, born 1784
  • Christian Ernst, born 1785
  • Johann Andreas, born 1789

Also living with the family in 1798 were Johannes' two step-sons, Johann Konrad Just, age 28, and Johann Balthasar Just, age 24.

Research Notes

She may be the same person as Anna Maria Schmidt, but the name Anna Maria Schmidt was so common, I don't want to jump to a conclusion without proper sourcing. One's family settled in Messer, and the other in Stephan. While she certainly could have moved from one village to another, I don't have conclusive proof of that yet.

I am creating as a separate profile for her. In the meantime, the 1775 Stephan and Messer censuses need to be checked to see if she was listed in each or either and the following items need to be confirmed:

  • Full name
  • Birth year, within 1-2 years
  • Married? If so, to who
  • Names of children, if any

For these women to be a match, Anna Maria Schmidt needs to have been married to Konrad Just in the 1775 Stephan census and have two children. If she's listed in the 1775 Messer census, too, then they are two different people.
