John C. Schmidt, first born son of Metta Hoeft and Andreas Schmidt, was born in 1887. Metta and Andreas had settled in Green Valley township of Solano County in California, where many immigrants from Germany were becoming successful fruit ranchers.[1]
The San Fransisco, 1910 census [2] shows John living in the home of an uncle, Ernest Hinsch, working at a foundry, true to his surname Schmidt which is derived from the German word "Schmied" meaning "blacksmith" and/or "metalworker".[3]
While living in San Francisco he met Maria Elisabeth Thormeir and they married in Nov of 1911. [4]The wedding was celebrated with family in Green Valley. The 1920 S.F. census [5] tells us that John has advanced to foreman at the iron works foundry and they have purchased their own home. Elizabeth’s father, Charles is living with them.
Yet to discover, are details of the next few decades. When did Elizabeth die and did they have any children. John died on 30 Jul 1976 in Sebastopol, Sonoma County CA. [6] where he had lived for four years, near his daughter Dorothea Prince.[7]
