Biography

Hilda Camilla Schmidt, 1898-1964, was the daughter of John Schmidt (b.1855 Germany) and Christine Marie Nissen (1865 Denmark-1940 Rupert, Minidoka, Idaho), who married in New York, New York in 1884. Hilda’s mother Christine was the daughter of Karl Henrick As,us Nissen (1833) and Ellen Hansen (1826). ^[1]

Hilda Camilla Schmidt was born on 1 March 1898 in Hailey, Blaine, Idaho, the daughter of German immigrants, John Schmidt and Christina M. Nissan. ^[2]

In 1900, the Schmidt family lived in Doniphan, Blair, Idaho. The household included John Schmidt, 52, born in Germany in Oct 1848, whose parents were b. In Germany. John immigrated to the US in 1864, and became a naturalized citizen. He was a farmer who owned his farm without a mortgage; his wife of sixteen years, Christina, b. Jan 1865, 35, b. In Germany, as were her parents. She had had six children, all living; their six children, all b. In Idaho: Ellen, 15, b. April 1885; William, 13, b. Feb 1887; Annie, 11, b. Dec 1889; Dora, 9, b. June 1891; George, 5, b. March 1895; and Hilda, 2, b. March 1898. All members of the household could speak, read and write English, except for the youngest two children. All the children were in school except for the youngest one. ^[3]

Hilda C. Schmidt and Glen F. Walton, both of Rupert, Minidoka, Idaho, married on 1 November 1916 in Rupert, Idaho. Witnesses were Thaddeus S. Eastwood and Christina Eastwood. C. E. Deal, clergyman, of Rupert, officiated. ^[4]

Hilda was born in Idaho in 1898. She married Glen Walton in Rupert, Idaho in 1916. They operated Walton’s Barber and Beauty Shop in Rupert for over 50 years, until 1961. Hilda died in 1964, and is buried with her husband Glen in Minidoka Acequia Rupert Cemetery, Rupert, Idaho. ^[5]
