Biography

OBITUARY: Edwin Herman Schmidt Sr. was born on January 29, 1920, the seventh child of Bernhard J. & Emma (nee Jurk) Schmidt of Northrup, Texas. The grace of God was bestowed on Edwin through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism on February 20, 1920 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin, Texas by Rev. Alfred Bohot. Edwin's elementary education took place at St. Paul Lutheran School in Serbin.

The Confirmation of God's grace was given to Edwin by the Rite of Confirmation on April 9, 1933 at St. Paul Lutheran Church by Rev. Herman Schmidt. The scripture assigned to be his memory verse for life was 1 John 5:4, "For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith".

The goodness of God's grace was given to Edwin on October 24, 1948 when he was joined in Holy Marriage to Gertrude (nee Sander) at St. John Lutheran Church in Lincoln, Texas. His brother, Rev. Theodore Schmidt officiated. This union was blessed with four children, Edwin Schmidt Jr. & his wife, Barbara of Northrup, TX, Robert Schmidt & his wife, Diane of Lincoln, TX, Kathy Mumm & her husband, Rev. David of Machesney, IL and David Schmidt & his wife, Karen of Serbin, TX.

At the age of 16, Edwin went to work on a houseboat in Houston. During WWII, He faithfully served our nation as part of the United States Army in Germany, France and Alaska. Following an Honorable Discharge from the Army, he worked at a paper-mill in Houston. After returning to Serbin, he worked various jobs in the Giddings area, as well as farmed in the Lincoln and Northrup areas. In 1968, the Schmidt family returned to the family homestead where he lived the remainder of his life. He was a life-long and active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin.

The glory of eternal life with our Lord Jesus Christ was given to Edwin during the early morning hours of Thursday, May 2, 2013 at Oakland Manor Nursing Center in Giddings.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, five sisters and one great grandson, Tyler.

Those awaiting a glorious reunion in heaven are his wife, his children, 12 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, one sister-in-law, Lorine Kurio of Giddings as well as other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings. Funeral services are scheduled at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin with Rev. John Schmidt officiating. Burial, with military honors provided by the Giddings American Legion York Post 276, will immediately follow in the church cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Edwin's grandson, Michael Schmidt, Steven Schmidt, Craig Schmidt, Bradley Schmidt, Nathaniel Mumm and B.J. Mumm. Honorary pallbearers will be his granddaughters, Pamela Schmidt, Brenda Symm, Leah Schmidt, Sarah Werzner, Naomi MacDonald and Rebekah Roehl.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff of Oakland Manor Nursing Center in Giddings, the doctors and staff at St. David's Medical Center South in Austin and Hospice Brazos Valley.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be directed to the St. Paul Lutheran Church Restoration Fund, 1572 County Road 211, Giddings, Texas 78942 or to the charity of one's choice.
