Biography of Francis "Frank" SCHMITT, Sr.

Frank Schmidt was born July 20, 1857 in Mannheim, Germany.

Frank Schmidt married and started a family. A few years later, in 1882, he immigrated to the United States of America, and settled in Hitchcock County, Nebraska, USA with his family. It is here where he changed his name to Schmitt to avoid confusion at the post office, because there was another Frank Schmidt in Culbertson who kept getting his mail.

Frank Schmidt/Schmitt married Gertrude Schutz of Herdon, Kansas on July 6, 1891, and they had a large family of 16 children. Four children died as infants.

  1. Mary Christina Schmitt, born January 19, 1892. who died in infancy
  2. Frank Leonard Schmitt, Jr., born July 19, 1893 who married Ada L. Philleo, the daughter of Ira Day Philleo and Rose R Philleo.
  3. Frederick William "Fred" Schmitt born August 21, 1894, who married Mabel Houchin.
  4. John Theodore Schmitt, born February 20, 1896
  5. Henry George Schmitt (twin), born August 23, 1897
  6. Anthony Schmitt, 9twin), born August 23, 1897
  7. Josephine Schmitt, born March 24, 1899, who married Floyd Edwards.
  8. Gertrude Dorothy Schmitt, born 1900
  9. Elizabeth Magdalene Schmitt, born 1901
  10. Anna Mary Schmitt, February 13, 1903
  11. Rosalie Schmitt, born February 13, 1905
  12. Dora Schmitt, born January 18, 1906 most likely,
  13. Veronica Agnes Schmitt, born February 6, 1907, in Holyoke, Colorado, who married Paul John Versch, Sr., the son of her step-father Adam Versch.
  14. Christina Schmitt, born February 12, 1908, in Holyoke, Colorado, who passed away in infancy at the age of nine months old.
  15. Leonard Alexander Schmitt, born June 10, 1909 in Holyoke, Colorado
  16. Paul Joseph Schmitt, born June 16, 1911 in Holyoke, Colorado.

Frank Schmidt purchased land in Hitchcock County, Nebraska in 1890 and again in 1893. Frank was a farmer in Driftwood Township in HItchcock County, Nebraska for many years. He is listed on the 1900 and the 1910 United States Federal Census for Driftwood, along with his wife and children.

Frank Schmidt and his wife continued to speak in German for most of their lives as recorded on the 1920 United States Federal Census for HItchcock, Nebraska.

Frank Schmidt and his family moved to Holyoke, Colorado sometime between 1905 and 1908, where several of their young children were born.

Frank Schmidt/Schmitt had a sister named Margarette Schmidt who married Peter Rieboldt, Sr. and had a large family. Peter Rieboldt bought Section 30 of Richland Township, Rawlins County, Kansas before 1906, land that had belonged to Adam Versch.

Frank Schmidt/Schmitt passed away in August 24, 1922 and Gertrude remarried to Adam Versch of Herndon, Kansas in 1923.
