Biography

Maria Anna was born about 1803 in Lacollonge, France. She came to the United States with her parents and four siblings about 1830. She married Peter Goffena/Goffinet about April 20, 1835. They had five children:

  • i. PETER GOFFENA, b. February 14, 1838, Beaver Creek County, Pennsylvania; d. August 25, 1915, Sidney, Ohio.
  • ii. MICHAEL GOFFENA, b. November 04, 1839, Wayne Twp., Darke Cnty., Ohio; d. May 17, 1922, Versailles, Ohio.
  • iii. MARIA ANNA GOFFENA, b. April 05, 1841, Patterson Twp., Darke Cnty., Ohio; d. November 07, 1907, Newport, Ohio.
  • iv. ELIZABETH A. GOFFENA, b. March 27, 1843, Wayne Twp., Darke Cnty., Ohio; d. May 15, 1843, Wayne Twp., Darke Cnty., Ohio.
  • v. ANNA GOFFENA, b. May 07, 1846, Wayne Twp., Darke Cnty., Ohio; d. May 09, 1929, Loramie Twp., Shelby Cnty., Ohio.

She passed away about 1846, apparently when Anna was born and is buried in Holy Family Cemetery, Darke County, Ohio. Oddly her tombstone lists her as wife of Peter Goffena (which is true, among his other wives that died young) but says she is a native of Belgium (which is true of Peter Goffena, but not true of Maria Anna Schmitt, who was born in Lacollonge, Territoire de Belfort, Franche-Comté, France).
