NOTE: The birth location of Stephen's father in the McHenry County History article is incorrect. His father Johann (John) Schmitt was born in Münk, Dist Mayen, Rhineland, German Empire (Germany today) His mother Maria Schmitt nee Schmitt was born in Nachtsheim, Dist Mayen, Rhineland, German Empire (Germany today).

"Stephen F Schmitt was born near the Fox River, one and one-half miles from Johnsburg, on 28 February 1856, a son of John and Mary Schmitt, Stephen F Schmitt was reared on his father's farm near Johnsburg where he remained until he was married at the age of twenty-one years, to Catherine Freund, a daughter of Nicholas Freund. Mrs. Schmitt was born near Johnsburg, and was eighteen years old at the time of her marriage. The young couple rented the farm owned by his grandfather, Martin Schmitt, and after five years, they then moved to the farm owned by Nicholas Freund [father of Catherine], two miles north of Johnsburg, where they spent three or four years. They then bought a farm one and one-half miles north of Ringwood, consisting of eighty acres of improved land, on which there was a new barn. After some years on it, Mr. Schmitt rented out that farm, and he moved the family onto his father's [John Schmitt] farm, which he operated for twenty years, and finally bought it for $67 per acre. The farm contained 198 acres, and later on his son, Matt Schmitt worked this farm. Mr. and Mrs. Schmitt became the parents of the following children: Matt, John, Joseph, Mary, Anna who married Matt Lay; Emma who married John Lay; Christina who married Peter Miller; and Agnes."
