Joseph Schmitt II was born on 29 November 1818 in the village of Eberbach-Sekz, Arrondissement of Wissembourg, Departement of Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France. Alsace had been part of France since 1639, but the inhabitants mostly still spoke a German-dialect at home. Joseph was the son of Joseph Schmitt Sr. (1785-1859) and his wife, Marie Anne (Lipp) Schmitt (1785-1854). Joseph, like his father was a "Tisserand" or Cloth Weaver. [1]
Joseph Schmitt II married fellow villager Magdalena (Lechinger) Schmitt (1816-1879) in Eberbach-Selz, Alsace, France, on 9 November 1843. [2] The couple lived in the village of Eberbach-Selz in the Arrondissement of Wissembourg, Departement of Bas-Rhin, France, where Joseph was a "Tisserand" [Cloth Weaver]. The couple had 6 children:
One of their sons,Bernard Schmitt, born in 1849 in Alsace, France, left Europe after France's defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 led to Alsace's being taken over by the newly-founded German Empire under Chancellor von Bismarck. He with his wife, from Bavaria, along with his younger brother: Anton Schmitt (1851-1919), emigrated to St. Louis, Missouri, USA, around 1872. [3]
Madeleine and Joseph Schmitt remained in their native village of Eberbach-Selz, now under German rule. Madeleine / Magdalena (Lechinger) Schmitt passed away at her home in Eberbach-Selz, Alsace-Lorraine, Germany, on 27 May 1879. She was 63 years old. [4]
Her husband survived his wife's passing for another decade. Joseph Schmitt, weaver, passed away at his home in Eberbach-Selz, Weißenburg, Elsaß-Lothringen, German Empire, on 5 April 1889. He was 70 years old. [5]
