Biography

Joseph Schmitt II was born on 29 November 1818 in the village of Eberbach-Sekz, Arrondissement of Wissembourg, Departement of Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France. Alsace had been part of France since 1639, but the inhabitants mostly still spoke a German-dialect at home. Joseph was the son of Joseph Schmitt Sr. (1785-1859) and his wife, Marie Anne (Lipp) Schmitt (1785-1854). Joseph, like his father was a "Tisserand" or Cloth Weaver. [1]

Joseph Schmitt II married fellow villager Magdalena (Lechinger) Schmitt (1816-1879) in Eberbach-Selz, Alsace, France, on 9 November 1843. [2] The couple lived in the village of Eberbach-Selz in the Arrondissement of Wissembourg, Departement of Bas-Rhin, France, where Joseph was a "Tisserand" [Cloth Weaver]. The couple had 6 children:

  1. Philippe Schmitt, 1844–1844
  2. Marguerite Schmitt, 1845–Deceased
  3. Bernard Schmitt, 1849–1927
  4. Anton Schmitt, 1851–1919
  5. Odile Schmitt, 1856–Deceased
  6. Joseph Schmitt, 1860–Deceased

One of their sons,Bernard Schmitt, born in 1849 in Alsace, France, left Europe after France's defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 led to Alsace's being taken over by the newly-founded German Empire under Chancellor von Bismarck. He with his wife, from Bavaria, along with his younger brother: Anton Schmitt (1851-1919), emigrated to St. Louis, Missouri, USA, around 1872. [3]

Madeleine and Joseph Schmitt remained in their native village of Eberbach-Selz, now under German rule. Madeleine / Magdalena (Lechinger) Schmitt passed away at her home in Eberbach-Selz, Alsace-Lorraine, Germany, on 27 May 1879. She was 63 years old. [4]

Her husband survived his wife's passing for another decade. Joseph Schmitt, weaver, passed away at his home in Eberbach-Selz, Weißenburg, Elsaß-Lothringen, German Empire, on 5 April 1889. He was 70 years old. [5]
