Biography

BERNICE KATHERINE SCHMITZ (Nov. 13, 1912-March 8, 1965) was the daughter of Nicholas Schmitz (1887–1967) and Christina Ballensiefer (1892–1950). She was born in Lenore, LaSalle County Illinois. She married HAROLD HYACINTH HUDAK (Sept. 14, 1915-July 4, 1993), on May 20, 1948 , in St. Joseph’s Church in Harvard, Wisc., and resided at 1105 Barnes St. in Delavan, Wisc. Bernice died of multiple sclerosis. They are buried in the Schalla-Hudak family plot in St. Hyacinth’s Cemetery, La Salle, Ill.

Notes:

- I left Amy's information about Harold and Bernice's wedding as she wrote it; however, there is no Harvard Wisconsin. It is likely that they were married in Harvard, Illinois, which is just a few miles south of the Illinois-Wisconsin state line and close to Delavan where Harold and Bernice settled. There is a St. Joseph's church in Harvard Illinois.

- Amy stated that Bernice had three children by a previous marriage, but I did not find any evidence of this. No children are enumerated with Bernice and Harold on the 1950 U.S. Federal census. Only the son Bernice and Harold had together was listed in her obituary. No other publicly available family trees at Ancestry have Bernice with a spouse other than Harold, and none have these three children. As of July 2022, Bernice is in the tree at Family search, but without husband or children. I leave this note here because errors in Amy's records are rare, in case there is some other member of the family this applies to.

- In the 1938 La Salle City directory, Bernice is working as a maid, living at the home of Jerome and Gertrude Sharp. Jerome was the President of the La Salle National Bank and Trust Company. She was similarly doing housework for a private family in 1940, though she was enumerated at her parents' address.
