Miles was born 12 Sep 1833 in Nicholson Township, Pennsylvania, the son of John Schnatterly and Melinda (Kendall) Schnatterly.
He also farmed his father's 111-acre farm. He made 2 trips "out west," in 1863 and 1866, and for a time worked as a miner in Montana. He married his cousin Mary Jane Schnatterly ("Jane") 16 Jul 1865. In 1870, he moved with his family to McDonough County, Illinois where he worked as a farmer and carpenter. He returned to the Pennsylvania farm in 1873. He was a deacon of the Oak Hill Baptist Church, and was a member of the Odd Fellows. [1]
Some time before 1900, he moved back to Illinois.
