Biography

Birth: Mar. 1, 1900 Strathcona, Edmonton Census Division, Alberta, Canada Death: Apr. 16, 1993 Viking, Lloydminster Census Division, Alberta, Canada

Marthe married Fred Lappenbusch in 1918, and they settled on a farm in the Silver Lake/Ross Creek area east of Edmonton. They had a daughter, Florence, in 1919, and lost a second daughter during a difficult delivery in 1920. After almost dying in the birth of her son Wyvil (known as Bud), she decided that the only way to safeguard her life was to leave her husband and children, an act considered unthinkable at that time. Since her parents and most of her siblings had moved to the Seattle area in 1920, she had few options available. She took Bud to Edmonton for surgery in the spring of 1924 and disappeared along with a male friend, Geoffrey Mealing, a grown "English home child" who was boarding with the Lappenbusch family while teaching at the local school. Fred eventually divorced her, but in those days, obtaining a divorce was a lengthy, difficult process. In the 1926 census, Fred Lappenbusch declared his marital status as 'married', and he himself didn't remarry until October of 1926, so it's likely that the divorce decree was issued in the fall of 1926.

Geoff married her once her divorce was finalized, I found a record in Alberta Provincial Archives, entry #704 for 1930 marriages for Geoffrey R Mealing in Edmonton; a copy of the record may be obtained from the Archives using this registration number. She would never tell her children or grandchildren when she married Geoff; presumably she was afraid to approach her ex-husband Fred Lappenbusch to see when their divorce went through, so the reason for her reticence is clear. Furthermore, it appears that Stanley was born only about 7 months after she left Fred. Fred's hot temper and physical might were well known among family, friends and neighbors, so it's highly unlikely that she and Geoff would have been foolish enough to risk conceiving a child while still living under his roof. The fact that Stan could have been a Lappenbusch only came to light after Stan's death, and it appears unlikely that he ever suspected that anyone other than Geoff could have been his father. Marthe and Geoff had a daughter, Jewell, soon afterwards, and they stayed together until Geoff's death in 1972. Geoff was a Schoolteacher, then Principal at the Holden School for some time. Marthe became a Registered Nurse and worked at the Edmonton General Hospital for many years.

Marthe's eldest daughter Florence sought out her mother in the late 1930's and introduced her to her first grandson, Jim. They became close. Marthe's son, Bud, made contact with her when he returned from the Navy after WWII, and they had a good relationship for the rest of his life (he died in 1987).

Marthe fought breast cancer successfully twice, in the 1960's and then again in the 1970's. She recovered quickly and was able to care for Geoff when he became very ill in the early 1970's. After his death, she lived life to the fullest. She had an energy level that allowed her to maintain an active social life; no-one could guess her true age because she appeared decades younger than her years.

When she was in her 80's, she married David Anderson, who "made her feel like a queen" according to her granddaughter, Jenette. Unfortunately, they barely had a year together before Dave died in 1983.

Marthe's daughter Jewell, and granddaughter, Janice, cared for her in her twilight years (she and Geoff moved to Viking in the 1970's to live close to them). They knew her better than anyone. She was brave, gutsy, clever and took in stride whatever life threw at her. In many ways, she was born a century too soon. However, she was forced to live with so many lies for so long that it would appear that in the end, she no longer knew what the truth really was. She told Florence and Bud that Stan and Jewell had been adopted, and she told them that Florence and Bud had been adopted. the birth certificates for Florence, Julie and Wyvil make it clear that she was their mother, and though I have never seen such documents for Stan and Jewell, their physical resemblance to her would make it seem unlikely that they had been adopted either. Only a DNA test will provide the truth, but I have not succeeded in contacting Stan's descendants.

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Marty by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Marty:
