From family history by cousin Myrtle (Schneider) Macdonald 1997: MARIE (MARY) SCHNEIDER born 15 May 1905 in Strathcona. When her parents and younger children Alex 11, Florence 9, Lawrence Fred 6 and Leonard 4 left Alberta in 1919 and settled in Puyallup in 1920, she was only 14 years old. Her older siblings in 1919 were: Tillie 23 who had married Frank Ford in 1916, Arnold 21, Marthe Lappenbush 19, Arthur 15. Where did she live and work until 1931? The children helped their father develop an outstanding orchard and gardens and tend the horses, cows and chickens. He taught them to knit and make sausages. They helped their mother with cooking, canning, making of sauerkraut and yogurt, making of feather comforters, mending and many kinds of sewing. She was five years older than Florence but they were very close. They both worked in Winatchee Cannery. She was known as Mary to some relatives. At 26 years of age, on 11 Nov 1931 she married ROBERT MARTIN born 30 Oct 1901, son of Ludwig Martin, previously from Tomsin, Poland, and Karolina nee Seutter of Karlshoff, Plotski, Warsaw. As newlyweds Marie and Robert began farming 5 miles south of Westlock, where they lived until they retired to Westlock in 1948. Marie was very talented. People often remember the ringlets, pink ribbons and lovely clothes Marie made for her two daughters when they were little. Like her mother Anna nee Job Schneider who had taught her well, and her father Fred, Marie loved to sew and garden. Marie and Robert won prizes for their lovely gardens and for decorating their home for Christmas. The summer of 1848 Mary took her daughters Lorraine and Phyllis to Puyallup WA. Quoting Lorraine: “to meet their American family. We stayed with Auntie Florence and family and had a wonderful time. Trudi [Uncle Alex Schneider’s daughter] and I became life-long friends. We picnicked at Mount Rainier and Surprise Lake. I was pushed off a peer, and being a non-swimmer sank to the bottom. I was saved by Gerald Hanson [aunt Florence’s son] and Uncle Art [Hanson who died 1961], so they have always remained special to me. We visited Uncle Art Schneider and rode horses – had a wonderful time with our cousins. We shall always remember Gramma and Grampa Schneider’s house with its verandahs, and picking cherries with Grampa.” “Ken and I have been back to visit several times, always staying with Aunt Florence. Mom died so young, so we adopted Aunt Florence as our mom and are grateful to Phyllis and Gerald [aunt Florence’s children] for sharing. [My sister] Phyllis and I have met all our mother’s siblings.”

After a lengthy battle with breast cancer Mary Martin died 2 Nov 1963 at 58 years of age. Bob died 23 Dec 1969 of a heart attack. Both rest in Westlock cemetery.
