Biography

Clarence F. Snyder was born on 1 March 1893 in Langford in Erie County, New York to Joseph and Emma Snyder.[1] By 1900 they had moved to Clay Center Township, Clay, Kansas[2] and in 1910 they were in Topeka, Kansas.[3]

He registered for the World War draft in 1917-1918 in Topeka, Shawnee County, Kansas. He was described as medium in height and build with brown hair and grey eyes.[4] He actually had one blue eye and one brown eye according to his daughter, Minnie Frances Snyder Smith. He enlisted 26 July 1918 as a private in the 4 Dev Co 164 DB. He was discharged the 23 November 1919.[5]

On 1 January 1920 he was in Camp Funston, Riley County, Kansas.[6]

Around 1927 he married Josephine McFarren in Topeka, Shawnee County, Kansas. They had four children, Frances, William, J. Edward and Clarence.[7][8]

Clarence died on 1 March 1944 and was buried in Topeka Cemetery, Shawnee County, Kansas.[9][10]

Research Notes

Snyder, Schneider, Schnieder. Clarence's name seems mostly spelled as Snyder until he entered military, then they spelled it Schneider, but it ended up Schnieder on the tombstone, which is likely an error.

Name change was made by my grandmother, Josephine McFerren Snyder, to Snyder after marriage.
