The Schneider brothers and their military service.

Frank Walter Schneider – born Feb 20th 1918 died Feb. 12th 1988. Oldest of the 5 brothers. His service records were destroyed in the fire but according to his daughter Nancy, he served in the Merchant Marine in 1941 – 1942 He was a radio operator in the merchant marine. He was briefly on the ship called the Patrick Henry. He was in Egypt and other parts of the Middle East, Australia, and Scotland.

Edward Cornelius Schneider – born May 29th 1921 died October 10th 1990. From Feb 15th 1939 to September 16, 1940 he was in the 244th Coastal Artillery National Guard. That unit was called up and became the 3rd Battalion of the 259th Coastal Artillery and was sent to New Caledonia on or about January 23rd, 1942. He told me (Son Glenn) that he had a brief stopover in Australia before going to Ouen Toro, New Caledonia. He was raised to the rank of Staff Sargeant on 11/1/1942. From New Caledonia he went to Guadalcanal after the main battle of Guadalcanal as an occupying force. He then was transferred to Papua New Guinea for which we have the Adjutant Generals record. Some of the records of these deployments were destroyed so we do not know when or how long he was there but on his Separation papers it says the following: He was Chief of operations section including operations, intelligence and reconnaissance. Supervised fire control and position firing for harbor defense at Guadalcanal and New Caledonia. He left New Guinea on or about September 12th 1944 per the Adjutant General’s Office and returned to San Francisco. Ed had spoken of being in Fiji and the Philippines but we do not have record of those stops. However according to Wikipedia : 3rd Battalion departed Camp Pendleton January 17, 1942 and deployed to New Caledonia in the South Pacific Area. On January 20, 1943 the 3rd Battalion was redesignated as the 259th Coast Artillery Battalion (155 mm gun). This unit deployed to Guadalcanal, Fiji, New Guinea, and the Philippines, and was inactivated August 20, 1945 in the Philippines.[4][9] See this link. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/244th_Air_Defense_Artillery_Regiment He spent 2 years 8 months and 11 days overseas. He was honorably discharged on June 18th 1945 at Fort Dix, New Jersey.

John P. Schneider – born March 12th 1924 died June 4th 1961 Enlisted in the 244th Coastal Artillery, National Guard March 27th 1940 It appears that he falsified his age as his records indicate he was born in 1922 when he was actually born in 1924 He would have actually been 16 years old. He entered active duty September 16th 1940. Transfer to the 376th Parachute Field Artillery Battalion Battery A of the 82nd Airborne on October 16th 1942. He was a parachutist who would jump to assemble field artillery that was parachuted to the battlefield. In January 1942 he was sent to Camp Pendleton, VA. He was transferred to Fort Macon, NC July 21st 1942. From Fort Macon he was sent to Fort Benning, GA for parachute training. From Fort Benning he was transferred to Fort Bragg NC on October 16th 1942. Was shipped out to North Africa April 29, 1943 arrived on May 10th. From the records that survived the fire we have the following information:

From North Africa John Arrived in Sicily July 11th 1943 Departed Sept. 9th 1943 Arrived in North Africa August 17th 1943 Departed Sept 9th 1943 Arrived in Sicily Sept 9th 1943 Departed Sept 22nd 1943 Arrived in Italy Sept 23rd 1943 Departed April 11th 1944 Arrived in England April 23rd 1944 Departed September 17th 1944 Arrived in Holland September 17th 1944 Departed of November 13th 1944 Arrived in France November 14th 1944 Departed December 18th 1944 Arrived in Belgium December 18th 1944 Departed February 10th 1945 Arrived in Germany February 10th 1945 Departed February 19th 1945 Arrived in France February 21st 1945 Departed April 2nd 1945 It is not indicated whether or not he jumped at all of these locations but the records do have this narrative: Parachute Combat jump on July 11th 1943 in Sicily in combat there until August 16th 1943. Participated in combat in Italy Volturno Front October 28, 1943 to Dec 29th 1943. On Anzio beachhead from January 26th 1944 to March 22nd, 1944.
