George was born in about 1846 in Germany. He immigrated to the United States in the early 1870s.[1][2] He married Rose Galarneau in about 1878.[1] In 1880, they lived in Detroit, Mich. with a servant and Rose's brother Augustus Galarneau. George worked as a butcher.[3] In 1900, they lived in Detroit with their two sons.[1] By 1910, however, George's health had deteriorated, and he was living at Eloise Hospital in Nankin, Mich.[2]
George died on 13 September 1914 in Eloise Hospital. His causes of death are listed as old age, asthenia (weakness), and chronic hemiplegia.[4] He was buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Detroit.[5]
Birth Year
George's death certificate has his date of birth as 11 Feb. 1856. However, the age listed on the death certificate would have him born in about 1846.[4] Additionally, every census record of him in the US would have him born in approximately 1848, making the earlier year more likely.[3][1][2]
