Biography

Francis Raymond Schneiderlochner was born in 1857 to Anthony and Sophia (Hirtz) Schneiderlochner. He was born and raised in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, since annexed by Pittsburgh.[1]

Starting in 1871, when he was just 13 or 14 years old, Francis worked in a number of Pittsburgh-area steel mills associated with Andrew Carnegie and his business partners. He was trained as a machinist, roll turner and designer, and by his early 20s Francis was managing the roll-turning and roll design at the Superior Rail Mill.[1] He was a general manager and director of the Superior Steel Company from 1896 until his retirement in 1916.[2] Mr Schneider was granted at least two patents related to the manufacture of steel axles.[3]

Schneider was a director of the Carnegie National Bank and the Pittsburgh Manganese Corp., and a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Americus Republican Club and the Pittsburgh Athletic Association. He worshipped at St Philip's Roman Catholic Church in Crafton, Pennsylvania.[1][2]

In 1882, Francis Schneiderlochner was married to Miss Josephine Sohl (1860–1927) of Pittsburgh. They had 10 children:[1][4]

  • Clara Sophia Schneider (1883–1961) married Carl J. Lutz.
  • Francis Anthony Schneider (1885–1893)
  • Aloysius Andrew Schneider (1888–1961)
  • Lawrence Eugene Schneider (1889–1977) married Hannah N. Gray.
  • Raymond Joseph Schneider (1892–1895)
  • Albert Raphael Schneider (1894–1900)
  • Edward Gerard Schneider (1897)
  • Edwin Joseph Schneider (1899–1974)
  • Josephine Marie Schneider (1902–1926)
  • Leo Anthony Schneider (1903–1942) married Bernice V. Blickle.

Schneiderlochner changed his family's name to Schneider in 1895.[5]

Francis Schneider died at his home in Crafton in 1922.[6]
