Biography

Article written on Hubert Alois Schnur after his death: "Hubert Schnur was born in Germany in 1904, and came to Tomahawk, in Alberta in 1930 to farm. From 1946-1947, he worked at Mercoal. In 1949 he came to Hinton and started mining with Emma Nickerson at Coal Creek. The following year, he found a coal vein, south of Hinton, near the present nuisance ground. Hubert and Carl Urban operated this mine for two years, then took in a third partner, Cliff Woodley. In 1953 Schnur's mine closed. The local coal market was depl... and the necessary capital unavailable. "Hubert then set up a saw mill west of town. In 1955 he contracted with North Western Pulp and Power...cut pulp logs. His crew felled trees, skidded them out with hor... and stockpiled them for delivery to ... mill (Willy Leithoff spoke of his cousin being a lumberjack). Schnur and his crew operate ... Camps9, 13, and 16. In 1962 Hu... left Hinton and homesteaded .... Evansburg. "During the operation of ... mine, but due to old age, and lac... capital, he was unable to begin a ... His mineral lease was there... cancelled. "Hubert married Helen Pi... in 1935. She died in 1956. Helen ...Hubert had four children: Rosemary 1937, Frank 1939, Wilhelmina 1941, and Gerry 1943. Rosemary and Ken Stralund live in Hinton with their four sons; Frank and his wife Lucien Dussault, have two children and live in Hinton; Wilhelmina live in Kamloops, but her two sons Randy and Robert Reich live in Hinton; and Gerry lives in Kamloops.
