OBITUARY
MR. JOSHUA SCHOLES.
At the age of 84 years the death occurred at his residence in Bourke Street yesterday, of Mr. Joshua Scholes, one of the few remaining links with the pioneering age in Australia. The late Mr. Scholes was born at Singleton, where his father, the late Mr. Joseph Scholes, had large pastorial interests. He was educated at the Maitland High School, one of the most important seminaries north of Sydney in those days. At an early age he entered into pastoral pursuits, and as a young man he came to this district, where he married Miss Sarah McInnes, of Marouan Station, who predeceased him by many years. One of the first properties he acquired here was "Oak Park" at Glencoe, and after a prosperous term there he purchased "Avon Downs" in the Moree district, and subsequently "Caranna" in the Charleville district and "Bogglewallah" at Hughenden, his enterprise and perseverance winning for him success in the successive ventures. About 16 years ago the deceased gentleman took up residence in Glen Innes, where he invested in town properties, which he retained at the time of his death. Famed throughout two States as an intrepid horseman, up till about a year ago, the late Mr. Scholes was a striking figure on his horse in Glen Innes, recalling those days when in establishing himself on his various station properties his skill as a horseman, along with the other attributes essential to success on the land in the pioneering age, was in constant demand. Surviving the deceased are five daughters — Mesdames F. Payne (North Queensland), F. King, (Toowoomba), and A. F. Price (Rose Bay); Misses Edith and Alma Scholes (Glen Innes) ; and four sons - Messrs. George (Hughenden Station), Archie (Singleton), Charles (Glencoe), and Alfred (Inverell). One son, Richard, predeceased his father. The only surviving brother is Judge Scholes, who is at present seriously ill in Molong Hospital, Sydney. The funeral arrangements for which were in the hands of Messrs. H. A. Tutt and Sons, took place 'this afternoon, the interment being made in the Presbyterian portion of the local cemetery, Rev. A. F. Cameron officiating at the local graveside.
